The Pierre d’Appel Association and the town of Étival will support you during your project, sharing archaeological tips and anecdotes to make the experience even more rewarding.

Work: Ce tout nouveau projet t invite à redonner vie à une ancienne zone de fouilles archéologiques en plein cœur des Vosges. Les objectifs pour cette année sont de proposer un espace sécurisé et aménagé pour les randonneur·se·s et de travailler les panoramas du site. Tu seras directement impliqué·e dans la restauration et la mise en valeur du site, en découvrant son histoire et son patrimoine archéologique. Tu participeras au nettoyage et au défrichage autour des fouilles pour sécuriser le site archéologique. Pendant les missions, tu seras encadré·e par des professionnel·le·s de l’archéologie et de l’ONF pour le taillage et l’aménagement des points de vue, ce qui te permettra de découvrir des techniques spécifiques et d’approfondir tes connaissances en archéologie tout en respectant le site et son environnement. En parallèle, tu pourras participer à un temps d’animation culturelle en fonction des programmations locales, pour découvrir le territoire autrement. En cas de forte chaleur, le site sera inaccessible et les temps de chantier seront annulés afin de garantir la sécurité de tout·e·s. Cette expérience te permettra de contribuer concrètement à la préservation du patrimoine archéologique tout en apprenant auprès d’expert·e·s. This brand-new project invites you to help bring new life to a former archaeological excavation site in the heart of the Vosges. This year’s objectives are to create a safe and well-designed space for hikers and to enhance the site’s viewpoints. You will be directly involved in restoring and showcasing the site, while discovering its history and archaeological heritage. You will take part in cleaning and clearing vegetation around the excavation site to help secure the archaeological area. During the activities, you will be supervised by archaeology professionals and by experts from the French National Forrests Office for pruning and developing the viewpoints, allowing you to learn specific techniques and deepen your knowledge of archaeology while respecting the site and its environment. At the same time, you may take part in cultural activities depending on the local program, offering you another way to discover the region. In case of extreme heat, the site will be closed and work sessions will be cancelled to ensure everyone’s safety. This experience will give you the opportunity to make a concrete contribution to the preservation of archaeological heritage while learning alongside experts.

Accomodation and food: Les bénévoles seront logé·e·s dans des tentes individuelles sur un terrain communal. Ils·elles auront accès au gymnase municipal juste à côté pour les sanitaires. Au-delà des temps de chantier, les bénévoles participent ensemble à l’organisation de la vie collective. Souvent réparti·e·s en équipes, ils·elles élaborent les menus, participent aux courses, préparent les repas et s’assurent de la propreté des espaces communs. Véritable acteur·ice de ton expérience, tu participeras aussi à la prise de décisions concernant les activités collectives et l’organisation du quotidien ! Dans une optique de réduction de l’impact environnemental de nos chantiers, nous privilégions des menus végétariens, qui répondent à tous les besoins nutritionnels des participant·e·s. Le groupe sera constitué de bénévoles français·e·s et internationaux·ales. Afin d’assurer l’intégration de tout le monde, nous comptons sur toi pour parler anglais autant que possible ! Volunteers will be accommodated in individual tents on municipal land. They will have access to the nearby municipal sports hall for sanitary facilities. Beyond working hours, volunteers come together to organise daily life on the camp. Often divided into teams, they plan menus, help with the shopping, prepare meals, and ensure the cleanliness of shared spaces. Fully involved in shaping your experience, you will also take part in decision-making regarding group activities and daily organisation! In order to reduce the environmental impact of our projects, we prioritise vegetarian menus, which meet all the nutrional needs of participants. There will be French volunteers on the workcamp. Some of them might not speak English. This can be an opportunity for everyone to develop new language skills and innovatove ways of communicating!

Location and Leisure: Le sentier de la Pierre d’Appel est un lieu emblématique des Vosges. En plus d’être l’un des plus beaux points de vue du département, iel·le·s cache les traces d’un passé très ancien. Les fouilles archéologiques révèlent que des humain·e·s ont occupé le site dès l’époque gallo-romaine. En te promenant ici, tu peux presque imaginer leur vie, leurs gestes et les histoires qu’iel·le·s ont laissées derrière eux. The Pierre d’Appel Trail is an iconic site in the Vosges. In addition to being one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area, it hides traces of a very ancient past. Archaeological excavations reveal that humans occupied the site as early as the Gallo-Roman period. As you walk here, you can almost imagine their lives, their daily gestures, and the stories they left behind. Every stone, every panorama tells you a piece of history across the centuries.
