The Abbey ramparts of Saint-Amand | SJ/TEEN44 | 2026-08-14 - 2026-08-28 | ARCH | Age: 15 - 17

In the heart of the Périgord Noir, in the exceptional setting of the fortified abbey of Saint-Amand-de-Coly, volunteers will be introduced to archaeological practices through a heritage enhancement workcamp focused on this medieval site. Dating back to the 12th–14th centuries, the site bears witness to the historical and religious importance of the abbey and its monastic enclosure in the organization of the territory during the Middle Ages. This workcamp is part of a process of knowledge transmission, heritage discovery, and awareness-raising about archaeological conservation. By following in the footsteps of archaeologists, participants will actively contribute to the understanding and enhancement of an emblematic monument, while discovering a region rich in history, landscapes, and local traditions. The summer will also be marked by cultural and festive events (night markets, village festivals), encouraging exchanges with the local population.

Work: Volunteers will take part in introductory archaeological activities by contributing to the excavation and enhancement of the northern curtain wall of the monastic enclosure of Saint-Amand-de-Coly. Supervised by an archaeologist, they will discover the different stages of an archaeological operation. Activities will include archaeological excavation, sediment sieving, and the washing and sorting of uncovered artifacts. Particular attention will be paid to precision, careful handling, and respect for the remains. Volunteers will also be introduced to archaeological methods and tools through dedicated educational sessions. Guided visits of the site and the archaeological operation will provide a deeper understanding of the monument’s history, as well as the challenges of research and heritage conservation. This workcamp therefore offers a comprehensive experience combining manual work, technical learning, historical discovery, and immersion in local life.

Accomodation and food: You will be welcomed at the Coly-Saint-Amand municipal stadium. Tents for two will be provided, as well as trekking foam mattresses. Remember to bring your sleeping bag and a pillow. A covered dining area is reserved for you, with a kitchen where you can take turns preparing tasty dishes. You will prepare the menus and meals together, taking into account the season, everyone s needs, and the pleasure of sharing together.

Location and Leisure: Location: Coly - St Amand is located in Périgord Noir, 10 km from the Lascaux caves in Montignac between Périgueux and Brive. Leisure: During your stay, you will have the opportunity to participate in local festivities and cultural events, discover the region, and organize your program of activities with the other volunteers and the animators.

Train/Bus station: Welcome on arrival in the late afternoon at Condat-Le Lardin station in Le Lardin-Saint-Lazare (24570).

The meeting point is Condat-Le Lardin railway station. You need to get there on 14/08/26 between 4 PM and 8 PM. The nearest international airport is in Bordeaux, and the train station where we will pick you up is in Le Lardin-Saint-Lazare. There is a shuttle bus from Bordeaux airport to Gare Saint-Jean in Bordeaux. The train journey from Bordeaux to Condat-Le Lardin takes about 1 or 2 hours, so make sure you arrive at the airport early in the morning or the day before your appointment. If you arrive the day before, you will need to arrange your own accommodation. Departure is on the last day between 9 AM and 12 PM maximum.
