Worldwide Friends (WF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 with the mission to promote nature conservation, intercultural understanding, and peace through volunteer activities in Iceland. In 2026, our focus will be on climate action, community resilience, and sustainable lifestyles — empowering participants to take meaningful action in their daily lives and local communities. WF organizes a variety of programs, including international workcamps, seminars, local community projects, and exchange programs, open to both young people and adults who wish to make a positive impact while experiencing Iceland’s unique culture and natural beauty.

Work: Placement in the field: Art, Environmental & Renovation Work / Group Management. Duration: 12 weeks Weekly hours: 38 The volunteer will work under the supervision of the Renovations Manager. The main tasks are to maintain and renovate the houses that WF is using for the volunteers. The houses are located in different areas of the island. Your activities include, but are not limited to basic repairs and maintenance tasks as required; For example, painting interior walls, creating murals, laying new floors, replacing doors and windows, installing/renovating playgrounds, and helping to insulate walls. While creating a safe environment for everyone. Additional tasks gardening and performing landscape duties or supervising others in these roles. Our first priority in establishing this program is that it should always stem from the organizations and the local community s needs. For this reason, our activities may change depending on the local need at any given time. The project sometimes will require you to take part as a Camp Leader; depending on the organization s needs you will have to help out by leading a workcamp. Organize and run programs for both short-term/long-term volunteers who will do 5 to 7 hours per day of environmental work during the weekdays. As a leader you will have to plan/organize a daily Workshop (from Monday to Thursday) giving a special focus on Global Warming, it can also be about other Environmental issues. You will travel around Iceland, as our houses are located at various sites across the island. We’re all about flexibility: we expect you to adapt to changes quickly and we encourage you to try new things. The work will depend on weather conditions, which is why we must be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, as they say: if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait 5 minutes and it might change. Working hours: from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with lunch and coffee breaks. Note: working hours may vary depending on the workcamps and the organization s needs. However, you will have 2 days off per week. And will be able to discover Iceland s unique sites.

Accomodation and food: During the workcamps the leaders will share a double and quadruple room. Beds, sheets and bedding are provided. Food is provided and everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, vegetarian/vegan options. We encourage our volunteers to try vegan and vegetarian food during their stay with us. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home!

Location and Leisure: Weekends are free, however, you will still need to be around. Try to plan activities with the volunteers. Usually, the excursions take place during the weekends. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs; You can check out all the excursion descriptions available for each camp on our website (https://wf.is/excursions/) The areas around the houses are also great for hiking. If volunteers want to go for a hike, make sure one of the camp leaders joins them. Remind the volunteers to share their plans in advance. Nature is always within reach here — go hiking, play golf, try ocean swimming, or even skiing. Remember to plan your hikes safely, respect nature, stay on marked trails, and never climb steep mountains without a professional guide. The Northern Lights can be seen from September to April, when the skies are dark and clear. Events to attend in Iceland
