Description: Kinniya is a seaside semi-urban area in Eastern Sri Lanka, near Trincomalee, notable for its predominantly Muslim population, contrasting with the national emphasis on Buddhism. The residents primarily speak Tamil, one of the two official languages, but its lesser use compared to Sinhalese contributes to cultural isolation. This isolation is compounded by geographical distance from other parts of the country, limiting community interactions. Additionally, Kinniya has been significantly affected by past conflicts, leaving lasting impacts on its social and economic structures. These cultural differences, language barriers, and historical scars present unique challenges, highlighting the need to foster connections and support local development & resilience. Host organisation: Inspire Village
Type of Work: The main aim of the camp is to promote interaction among children from different ethnic groups, fostering understanding and collaboration. Volunteers will teach English to students from grades 1 to 11 at Nalanda School during a special English week, culminating in an awards ceremony. In addition to language instruction, volunteers will prepare an English classroom by tidying and decorating an available room to create a conducive learning environment. The camp will also engage Kinniya's Muslim youth in various English-centered activities, encouraging meaningful interactions and shared experiences. Ultimately, the camp seeks to bridge cultural divides and foster a sense of community among Kinniya's diverse ethnic groups.
Study Theme: The camp will focus on peacebuilding in diverse countries like Sri Lanka, where ethnicities, religions, and languages can create divisions. More than a decade after the civil war between Tamils and Sinhalese, the lingering effects highlight the need for dialogue and reconciliation. Participants will engage in discussions and activities that promote respect and cooperation while exploring coexistence. By addressing historical contexts and fostering shared experiences, the camp aims to cultivate understanding and collaboration, contributing to a more harmonious society in Sri Lanka.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted in a house dedicated for the workcamp participants located in Kinniya beachfront. The living conditions are quite simple, featuring shared rooms and communal bathroom facilities. This communal living arrangement encourages interaction and bonding among volunteers while providing a basic yet comfortable environment for your stay.
Language: English
