Work Camp leader in Agriculture & Forestry | WFMTV03 | 2023-12-04 - 2024-03-01 | AGRI,ENVI,CULT | Age: 22 - 29

Participants will have the opportunity to visit one or two projects. During this project, the placements will be based on availability and Organization needs. Both projects are within 30 min distance Hveragerdi The leaders will spend their time in Hveragerði which is in the south 40 km away from the capital Reykjavik. Our host is the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy their diverse rehabilitation programs, which are focused on an approach that builds self-confidence and personal responsibility for the patient’s own health. The Clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. Solheimar The village of Sólheimar lies in the southwestern part of Iceland, the municipality of Grímsnes- og Grafningshreppur. About 1 hour and 30 min from Reykjavík. Sólheimar is an eco-village in Iceland and is renowned for its ecological, artistic, and international community ethics. Its current population size is about 100 people. Now powered with thermal and solar energy, the village is fully sustainable, boasting a greenhouse, an arboretum, egg-laying facilities, and forestry programs.

Work: Hveragerdi The work in this camp is coordinated by The Natural Health Association. They have a Horticultural and Environmental Department, including Forestry, Gardening, and Agriculture (Greenhouse), which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. The work will be in the greenhouses planting and harvesting vegetables, doing weed control and sometimes you will also be gardening. The agriculture that is practiced in the center is organic/bio. Working hours; 8:00 to 3:00 pm with lunch and coffee breaks. 2 days off per week. Solheimar The main work in this camp will be in forestry called Ölur and also in the greenhouses which are called Sunna. The main activities, but not limited to are; Forestry; managing, planting, using, conserving, and repairing forests, woodlands, and associated resources for human and environmental benefits. Agriculture: cultivating soil; planting; raising, and harvesting crops. Horticulture: growing fruits, vegetables, and plants. Environmental work on the property (Renovation when needed) *During winter the work might include snowplowing. Participants might require to help in the workshops in Solheimar. Working hours Solheimar; 9:00 to 4:00 pm with lunch and coffee breaks. 2 days off per week. Tasks in Projects: coordinate the work, organize house schedule, and leisure activities, shop, supervise cooking sessions, and plan excursions. Organize Workshops. Apart from these additional responsibilities, you will participate in general activities as a volunteer. In each group, there are two leaders from the organization. Projects are organized with international volunteers

Accomodation and food: Hveragerdi: Shared double rooms in a house fully equipped. The house is within the medical compound and has 5 double rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and a living room. House Capacity 10 participants total Solheimar: The house is across the village and has 4 double rooms with a private bathroom each, a fully equipped kitchen, and common areas. The common areas are shared with some of the local workers. House Capacity 8 participants total Food is provided and everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and vegetarian/vegan options. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home! Wireless internet access is provided free of charge.

Location: Solheimar

Location and Leisure: Hveragerði is known for having great areas for hiking, including the hot river in Reykjadalur. We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers. WF Iceland will organize excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs. This project gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.

Requirements: Leaders should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses. Physical skills: Physical strength, Heavy lifting, Hand-eye coordination, Strong eyesight, Good hearing. Fine motor skills Skills and competencies: Our leaders have to be Positive and Highly Motivated. Self-initiative and Organizational skills are a must. Time-management skills and ability to work under time pressure during high peaks of the season. Effective communication. Flexibility

We will pick you up from BSI Bus Station, please when you are on the bus let us know. WF staff will pick you up outside the bus station. We will communicate via WhatsApp, there s free Wi-Fi on the bus and at the terminal. If you arrival to BSI is after 20:00 hrs., we won’t be able to pick you up. In this case you can book a hotel for your stay or take a taxi to our Accommodation.

Please note!!! This is only open for participants with good knowledge or education in the field of Agriculture or Environmental Science. Local travels: You will have the opportunity to travel all around Iceland free of charge with the scheduled minibus trips organized by WF Iceland. Please note that travels during your free time are not paid for.
