Worldwide Friends Iceland is running a center of Environment & Sustainability near the crossroads to the West, South, and North of Iceland. The center is called BRÚ, and it is located in Hrutafjordur which is 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra, on the R1. Keep in mind that is a 1-hour drive to the closest city (Borganes). Based just off the main road, we are not set in a town, therefore the only way to get around is by car. Brú s stunning surrounding countryside offers the perfect tonic to relax and leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Worldwide Friends (WF), was founded in 2001 as a non-profit organization promoting nature and peace-oriented activities for volunteers wanting to spend some time in Iceland. Our main theme for this year is to give education about the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations and to clean the whole coastline of Iceland. The main activities that we offer are workcamps, seminars, local events, and exchange programs suitable both for young people and adults.

Work: The workcamp leaders will work as a team under the supervision of the Project Manager of the organization. They will be involved in preparing, organizing, running, and evaluating Nature-oriented, Educational, and Environmental Protection Projects in Iceland. Those projects are organized with international volunteers. In each group, there are two or three leaders from the organization. At the end of each camp the project coordinator will be expected to produce an evaluation of the projects and their results. At the beginning of their stay, here, they will receive qualified training from the organization’s staff members. This training will capacitate them to perform the Projects´ activities, which vary between Cleaning Beaches, Planting trees, and Environmental-related tasks to taking care of environmental awareness campaigns and Renovation work. At the same time, leaders will receive guidance in how to plan, organize and lead the projects, including topics as group management, conflict resolution, bookkeeping, development, leadership roles, intercultural cooperation, motivation, etc. They will also receive practical information about planning a project, spare time activities, etc. In this project, the leaders will organize and run programs for both short-term/long-term volunteers which will do 5-7 hours of environmental work during weekdays. The main work is cleaning the coastline in the area and to recycle the plastic that we find on the coast while cleaning. We will also open a workshop where we will recycle the plastic that we find at the coastline. The group will also do some renovation in the property of Worldwide Friends and in the garden. As a leader you will have to plan/organize a daily Workshop (from Monday to Thursday) giving a special focus on Global Warming, it can also be about other Environmental issues. The issue of global warming is well-known all over the world. Humanity must act in a more environmentally friendly way. The main goal of this project is to improve the environmental education and consciousness of the projects’ participants. Within the project, we will learn about green energy, sustainable householding, waste treatment, nutrition, the effects of consumption, and lots more. If you want to change something, develop solutions, or inspire others, you have to understand the issues and tasks first. Take part in this promising project and spring into action against climate change!

Accomodation and food: During the workcamps the leaders will share a double and quadruple room in a house fully equipped. Beds are provided, however, volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Food is provided and everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of food products that includes a wide variety of whole grains, seasonal fruits & vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and vegetarian/vegan options.

Location: Bru500Stadur

Location and Leisure: Weekends are free, however, you will still need to be around. Try to plan activities with the volunteers. Usually, the excursions take place during the weekends. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, or even icebergs. The areas around the houses are also great for hiking. If volunteers want to go for a hike, make sure one of the camp leaders joins them. Remind the volunteers to share their plans in advance.
