Concordia is excited to relaunch our international volunteering projects for 2023 with our own flagship volunteering programme for 14 international teenage volunteers in Brighton. Concordia will be working on the previous success of Brighton Rocks (2018-2020). Concordia will host a group of international volunteers in Brighton to work on an environmental project. The project will be a blend of environmental work, manual work and time for the young people to carry out leisure activities in and around Brighton.

Work: The volunteers will be completing environmental and manual work, working with a local partner accommodated nearby Brighton. Volunteers should be ready to volunteer outside. Volunteers will be working with the Brighton Permaculture Trust, a long term sustainable partner of Concordia. Volunteers will carry out work on a beautiful community orchard, working with other local volunteers for two days. The third day will be dedicated to the Brighton Permaculture Plot creating opportunity to act towards the sustainability and resilience at Brighton Permaculture trust. Tasks include: - Forest Gardening - Water Harvesting - Composting - Seed Saving - An Education of the Uses and benefits of weeds. It is a wonderful place to ask any questions you may have about sustainability and permaculture. The trip will be 7 Days (6 nights including travel days) with 3 days dedicated to volunteering, 1 and half days dedicated to leisure and culture, with two travels days included. During a leisure day volunteers will have the opportunity to visit Lewes (a nearby historical town) carrying out treasure hunt, a Visit to Brighton town, going to the pier and the beach. Volunteers will also have to opportunity to take part in expedition and orienteering challenges!

Accomodation and food: Volunteers will be accommodated at Varley Park, the University of Brighton, in Coldean, a suburb in North East of Brighton. Each volunteer will have their own bedroom with a bed, sharing bathroom facilities with other volunteers. Volunteers will have communal kitchens in which there is a fridge, freezer and ovens. There will be WiFi provided by the University, please not that the plugs will be British three pin standard. Food will be prepared by volunteers as a team. Food will be cooked and prepared by the volunteers. The Concordia Coordinator will arrange a rota with a couple of volunteers cooking for the group each night. There will be two kitchen areas, one accommodated in each flat of 8 people. All volunteers should be prepared to cook, clean and play a full part in making this an enjoyable experience! It is a great chance for volunteers to experience several different food cultures and dishes, please do bring your favourite recipes from home! If you have any allergies or dietary requirements please inform Concordia UK beforehand and this can be accommodated for.

Location: Brighton

Location and Leisure: Brighton is situated on the South Coast of England, roughly 90 minutes south of London by train, located in East Sussex. It is a picturesque seaside town, rich in diversity, history and individuality. Famous for its pier and North Laines, Brighton has lots to discover! The project will take place in Brighton, East Sussex, England. Brighton is a vibrant city where the volunteers will explore British culture and develop their language skills. Cultural visits and leisure activities will be organised together with the group. Visits to close-by sites will ensure that the group get the whole feeling of the city. Surrounding Brighton is the South Downs, a national park providing great hiking opportunities to reach great views of the county. The Concordia Coordinator will help volunteers make plans for their free time – but volunteers will be expected to contribute ideas and suggestions for activities. CULTURAL & LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Please note that an important part of the project is dedicated to intercultural exchange Cultural and leisure activities will be defined later on together with the group, however these may include: • Visiting some of the local landmarks • Exploring Brighton beach • Brighton Museum & cultural heritage sites • Group games at the accommodation led by Concordia’s Coordinator • A Visit to Lewes to carry out a Treasure Hunt • International and intercultural evenings with other members of the volunteering project • Evening Activities (Movie Nights, Game Nights) • Cross Cultural Cooking Evening

CONCORDIA COORDINATOR: Two Concordia leaders will join the group. These leaders will have strong experience in leading groups on projects and has been trained by Concordia and will have an enhanced DBS check. Brighton Station is the Meeting Point - Volunteers to get direct train to Brighton Station and meet outside the railway station.
