Description: The camp takes place in the picturesque village of Kaukonen, with many original wooden buildings. A local cooperative has created a sustainable water facility to ensure supply of clean water for the village. Water levels of rivers and lakes are being disturbed because of climate change and electric power stations. Next to the practical work at the water facility you get the opportunity to experience local nature, culture, and social habits. The camp takes place during the harvest season in the north of Finland, Lapland so you’ll get a chance to enjoy locally sourced vegetables, and possibly even go berry picking and fishing.

Type of Work: The volunteers will take part in cleaning, organizing, and painting the waterwork’s facilities. Fencing of the facilities will also be included in the tasks of the volunteers. Watching the documentary ‘Day Zero - What About Water?’ is also part of the volunteering programme. Volunteers should bring their own rubber boots and clothes for outside work, and biking helmets, if they have such, as the commute between accommodation and work location is done by bikes. During their free time, the volunteers can visit the local Särestöniemi museum and try some hiking at the arctic hills. There will also be a horse racing event on 14th August which volunteers can attend.

Study Theme: Clean and sustainable water supplies

Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in two separate houses that are located close to each other. Both houses include a washing place, toilet, sauna and washing machines. Volunteers will sleep in shared rooms, with separate spaces for men and women if needed. Volunteers will cook their own meals with the provided ingredients.

Approximate Location: Kaukonen, North Finland (Lapland)

Notes: Covid-19: Due to the possible changes in the coronavirus situation, we will confirm the camp 4 weeks before the starting date. Please don't book your travel tickets before the camp is confirmed.

Additional Fee: Many SCI workcamps will have an additional fee of €50.00. This will cover eg. local hosting costs & international insurance costs of the volunteer. If you apply through an SCI branch the fee will be included in the fee you pay to your sending branch. If you apply through a partner organization you will pay the fee on arrival direct to the hosting branch or through a transfer system. When accepted on the project the host branch will give you more details. Check branches & partners here: https://sci.ngo/about-us/our-movement/where-we-are/
