Location: Iceland is a country full of astonishing nature and beautiful landscapes just waiting for you to experience. Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the land, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. In a country of only just over 360,000 people, the Reykjavík Capital Area has a population of about 200,000. However, since it’s the only major city in the country, Reykjavik has a lot of the amenities that you would only expect to find in a much larger center elsewhere in the world.
Reykjavik is the world’s northernmost capital city and is centered on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula. Come at the right time of year, and in favorable conditions you will see the city’s skyline silhouetted against the glowing, shimmering curtain of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Reykjavik is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay to the north, while rugged lava-fields spread to the southeast. On a clear sunny day, the Snaefellsjökull glacier glitters on the western horizon like a crystal.
Short description of the project/projects: The Workcamp leader will work under the supervision of the director of the organization. The volunteer will take care of the Social Media platforms of the organization to promote the voluntary work, educational tours and environmental protection itself. For that the volunteer will be provided with material from other volunteers and employees of WF Iceland. The platforms include especially Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Also updating content on the website of WF (http://wf.is) is part of their responsibilities.
Moreover, the volunteer is expected to work on own ideas, concepts to promote the organization, such as special events, marketing actions, etc. For example, WF is longing to attract more native people from Iceland to participate in voluntary works.
In the beginning of their stay, they will receive qualified training from the organization’s members. This training will capacitate them to perform the projects´ activities, which vary between cleaning beaches, planting trees and different kinds of environmental-related tasks to taking care of environmental awareness campaigns. At the same time, they will receive guidance in how to plan, organize and lead the projects, including topics as group management, conflict resolution, bookkeeping, development, leader roles, intercultural cooperation, motivation, etc. They will also receive practical information about planning a project, spare time activities, first aid, etc.
In the end of each camp the project coordinator will be expected to produce an evaluation of the projects and their results. Also, the workcamp leaders will have a mid-term evaluation either with the project manager or the director of Worldwide Friends Iceland.

Activities: Our primary activity is organizing environmental-related projects where people come from different countries performing voluntary work. In organizing them, much emphasis has been put on making sure the volunteers see that their work is important, they help a community in need, or they work for the protection of the environment. In the meantime, they themselves form a community and get in close contact with locals as well as with other participants of the project from different cultures and nationalities. They find out about each other's habits and ways of life, also getting an insight of the area’s problems and its inhabitants.
Accommodation and Food: During the workcamps the leaders will sleep either in the Northwest of Iceland (Brú) or in the farm, next to the capital area of Reykjavík. Volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Food is provided, but everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home! There is internet connection available in all houses.
