Description: Vardø is a small town in the very northeast of Norway. It has app. 2000 inhabitants. It is the oldest town of Northern Norway, situated on an island in the Barents Sea, and is the only town in Norway situated in the Arctic climate zone. The distance from Vardø to Oslo is about 2000 km, so you need to estimate some extra costs for travelling there. Vardø has lots of history to offer visitors, amongst others memorials from WW 2, the northernmost fortress of Europe and a memorial of execution of women thought to be witches. Another aspect of Vardø is its scenery and nature, various birds are nesting there and it is good opportunities for hiking. Vardøhus museumsforening is a voluntary org. Some of its projects is refurbishing the old building of Vardø museum, and bunkers from WW2

Type of Work: The work for the vols is divided into 2 parts. One will be refurbishing the surroundings of the old building of Vardø museum, Lushaugen, cutting grass etc. The second part will be filed work near the bunkers of Kibergneset, above the village Kiberg. Here we will search for items from World War 2 that can be used for the exibition at the Partisan museum in Kiberg (a museum that tells the story of Norwegian resistance people assisting the Russian during WW2). This is the largest part of the work for the workcamp vols. All work will be done with the instruction and supervision from a work leader.

Study Theme: Peace work and conflict resolution. Norwegian-Russian relations in the northern part of Norway.

Accommodation: Inside the old buliding of Vardø museum, Lushaugen. There are some rooms at disposal for the vols. and kitchen and batherooms. The house is situated in the centre of Vardø.
