Basic Information

Project code: UV.STV-24

Ending date:  27th Dec.2020

Location: Marangu-KILIMANJARO

Number of Volunteers: 8

Min. age: 16

Max. age: 99

Most schools in Tanzania have vacation during Christmas season, where kids are expected to join family members for extracurricular activities, educational tours and other studies outside class rooms. However, the experience has indicated that most students do not have any structured activities that are fully involving them for personal and academic development.  As a result, bad influences during holidays time have affected the kids significantly since they join different peer groups and have limited supervision of their parents or guardians. This project is aiming to fill in the gap through effectively utilizing the vacation time and to allow students/kids to join structured activities which will contribute to their growth. The project is also aiming to give kids from the less privileged family an opportunity to enjoy the end of years’ festivals as other children.

We are expecting to work with 30-60 children from the community, between 5- and 13-year-olds, mostly pre-school and primary school students. Volunteers’ tasks will include:

  • Games: indoor and outdoor games that will stimulate learning, team building and activeness. Local games will be introduced as well foreign ones from the volunteers.
  • Gardening:  ornamental and vegetable planting, composting, garden tour etc.
  • Nature activities: bird watching, tree planting, learning about various plants, birds, animals, worms and insects which are found in the area.
  • Academic development: Holiday’s homework, various competitions aiming to motivate children’s academic development and getting ready for the new academic semester.
  • Painting: painting some class rooms at the local school.

Location & Leisure

The word "Marangu" means a place with too many water streams. It is one of the most popular places in Tanzania. Located at the foot of Africa's tallest mountain, the quaint village of Marangu offers fascinating insight into both modern Tanzanian life and into the lives of the Chagga people who once withstood vicious Maasai raids through the ingenious use of tunnels. Many Marangu residents are farmers growing bananas, vegetables and coffee. However, the biggest source of income is tourism. The Marangu route is the most popular hiking route in Africa. The facts and reality of Marangu makes this place to be accessible with all social, economic and security facilities. You will not regret to be in Marangu, Kilimanjaro.

Being in Northern Tanzania known as the capital of cultural, natural and tourist attraction you will have a good number of options:

  • Cultural & Eco tourism around Chagga communities in Kilimanjaro, Masai in Arusha and the neighboring regions.
  • Hiking – there is a possibility of Hiking in Kilimanjaro mountain nature forest.
  • Wild-life safari – Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National parks.
