High Spirit Community Farm
Location: Great Barrington, Massachusetts, USA
Duration: Volunteer should stay and be willing to commit to 1 year of service.
Application: The volunteer will get a decision about his/her ap- plication within 2 weeks of the host organization receiving his/her application.
We are a small community, currently consisting of 2 homes of life-sharing in- dividuals. We have a big garden, pigs, goats, and chickens. The adults with disabilities live and work together with their caregivers in a warm, supportive family environment, integrated into every aspect of household life and actively participating in the care of the community’s farm.
Work: The volunteers are fully integrated into one of the two homes in the community. We spend time working together in our organic garden. We have a community meal together each day of the week, excluding Saturdays and Sun- days. Each morning the residents and coworkers participate in our farm program on our property. The afternoons are spent doing various activities around town or with other programs. The main responsibilities of volunteers are in the trans- port and care of people with disabilities including, but not limited to: - Support in daily activities - Support in daily rhythms - Support for daily hygiene - Sup- port for workshops and leisure activities - Support in the household (cleaning, cooking, tidying up) - Transport to various activities (driving license required) - Support in daily farm work responsibilities As varied as the activities of the institution are, the volunteer’s tasks can also be quite diverse, so flexibility and open-mindedness should are a must.
Requirements: Good English language skills and language skills are very im- portant. Prerequisites are a (international) driving license (as well as driving practice) and a minimum age of 18 years. Experience in cooking and other household tasks is desired. Craft skills are an asset. Good teamwork and inde- pendent work are expected. Smoking and drinking are absolutely prohibited to those, not of United States legal age. The application must be accompanied by 2 professional letters of recommendation.
Food: Food is provided.
Accommodation: A private room is provided for each volunteer within the host familys home.
Pocket money: 200 USD per month
Insurance: The volunteer must have his/her own insurance. The volunteer will be covered by host sites vehicle insurance.
Visa: SCI will provide documents for Visa
Others: An ongoing course in English as a Second Language is available locally, volunteers will attend various training upon arrival, there will be opportunities for group excursions throughout the year. Each volunteer will have 6 weeks of vacation. The dates of vacation will be predetermined and given to volunteers(s) upon arrival to host site
