VTMW19-01     Ma On Shan Living in a Mining Village 2 May 2019 – 5 May 2019 

Project The project is co-organized by VolTra and the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong.  Ma On Shan was once a mining area, operated for 70 years from 1906 to 1976. A renovation project for the Grace Youth Camp has been launched since 2012, which aims to energize the historical buildings and bring out the precious spirit of hardship and perseverance demonstrated by the Ma On Shan miners in the past 

Activities 1. Participating in guided tours and traditional cakes making   Walking in the mountains, to explore the story of the mining village and the church. 
 
2. Site maintenance & Rejuvenation  Weeding, cleaning the floor or walls  Build up garden & planting  mining area maintenance 
 
* Remark: The schedule is tentative and subject to changes. Accommodation Workcampers will stay in a dormitory at the site venue. The living environment is very basic and simplistic but in a peaceful rural living style. Sleeping bags are recommended. 

Location Ma On Shan was once a mining area, operated for 70 years from 1906 to 1976. The Grace Youth Camp is situated just next to the old mines. The camp was a church in the past, offering help and assistance to the miners and the villagers. It is constructed with five buildings, included camping area and a chapel.

Extra Fee USD 150 per participant (paid by cash on arrival) Remark Basic living condition in the nature. Workcamp activities involve largely outdoor physical work.  Local Organizer The aims of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong are to provide integrated services to the grassroots and the disadvantaged with an innovative, caring and people-oriented approach. Currently they have more than 40 service units across the territory. Each year, over 150,000 people receive their services, ranging from small children, elders, families, schools to the employment sector.
