Description: This workcamp is organized by SCI India and CTRD Trust. CTRD TRUST: The Centre for Tribals and Rural Development Trust (CTRD Trust) is a voluntary organisation registered under the Indian Trust Act in the state of Tamil Nadu. We currently work on projects and programmes aimed at promoting and strengthening the livelihood, welfare and development of the poor tribal and rural communities of the Nilgiri District. This involves organising them, enhancing their capabilities, introducing new ways of improving their income and linking them to banks, markets and other health, welfare and economic services. Experienced professional teams based in the field use their skills and knowledge to alleviate poverty by working directly with these communities.
Type of Work: The volunteers will be engaged in helping in the construction of 21 all weather proof houses for the tribal community located at Narangamoola village. Rural Housing Projects’ prime objective is to construct 21 weather-proof houses as well as sanitation facilities during a period of three years in the Narangamoola village in accordance to values, traditions and needs of South India’s indigenous population: The work consists mainly physically demanding construction work. This includes carrying and piling bricks, mixing cement, painting etc. The group will also visit other indigenous communities and the surrounding area of the Nilgiris District (International Biosphere Reserve) to get to know more about the indigenous culture and their living circumstances as well as unique surrounding.
Study Theme: The main focus of this camp is to improve the living conditions for one of India’s poorest ethnic minorities by providing adequate housing and sanitation facilities. Additionally, the participants get to know the living conditions of an indigenous community. Most days of the workcamp will be covered by construction works in the Narangamoola village. However, weather conditions (like heavy rain)do not always allow activities to take place outdoors.
