VIVE18.21 Sea Turtles Conservation VIII Full

About the project

Vive Mexico has been organizing this project regularly in Rincon de Guayabitos, Nayarit since 2014. The main achievement of the project is to protect the sea turtles with the help of volunteers who will be cooperating with a team of biologists. Up to now, the project has been quite successful and has reached extraordinary results. There are two types of sea turtles in la Peñita de Jaltemba which are the oluve ridley and the black turtle. The size of the turtles can vary from 1 meter to 1.5 meters and they weigh from 40 to 100 kilograms. Each turtle leaves around 150 eggs. Participating in sea turtle conservation is a great opportunity to discover the rather charming life of sea turtles.

Project activities

The volunteers will be working at night from 20:00 to 08:00, four days per week with an average of thirty hours. Depending the number of turtles that come ashore, two teams might be formed among the volunteers. In this way, each group will be taking turns, working one night and taking the next night off for recovery. In addition, the weekends are also spared for resting. Some of the activities to be performed are: 1. Finding adult turtles and collect their eggs. 2. Moving the eggs to a protected place called Vivero. 3. Releasing newborn baby turtles into the sea. 4. Patrolling the beaches at night. 5. Making some reconstruction in the most important turtle camps of the region. If you love nature, want to have a great time by the beautiful beaches, at the same time enjoying all the amenities of a hotel and witnessing the magical spectacle of natural miracles that has been reoccurring since millions of years... then this project is for you!

Riviera Nayarit is emerging as one of the most attractive and magic destinations of Mexico. The area extends approximately 300 kilometers along the coast, integrated by mountainous jungle and facing coastal islands. For those seeking a more rural and rustic experience with magic beach towns in Mexico, the Riviera has a massive open space for everyone along the Nayarit coast, also, for those who want to relax there are also quiet beaches and there are other beaches with heavy waves for surfers. Below you can find

If you have extra time you can visit Tepic which is the capital of Nayarit state. Regional Museum of Nayarit state is located in Tepic.

Another option would be to go to the small fishing village of Chacala and visit the Alta Vista Petroglyphs archeological site. Also as the village is located by the ocean, you can participate in boat excursions, whale watching or fishing.

If you prefer to visit a more touristic location, you can travel to Sayulita which is home of sandy beaches, rideable waves, good restaurants and B&Bs. From Sayulita there is an option to travel to the uninhabited Islas Marietas for picnicking, snorkeling or swimming.

Puerta Vallarta which is 70 km from Rincon de Guayabitos is one of the most charming tourist destinations in Mexico. The old town centre “Zona Centro” is the area north of Rio Cuale. You can cross the river to visit the “Zona Romantica” with two central beaches, restaurants and bars.
