Location: Uzi Island (ZANZIBAR)
Description of the Location: Uzi is a small island in the south of Zanzibar’s main island Unguja. Little has changed in Uzi during the last centuries. Most of the island's 5000 people are fishermen and farmers. The island is located in the Menai Bay conservation area which forms an important ecosystem of mangrove forests, sea grass beds, islands with fresh water forest, coral reefs and a large diversity of plants, land and water animals, including dolphins, African Sea Eagles, and protected marine turtles.
Description of the Project: It is believed that the world’s population recently passed more than 7 billion people, an incredible number to measure. In Tanzania, Africa as well around the world many people still barely meet anyone outside of a small circle of family, friends and community while even more never venture beyond the culture in which they were raised. Cultural exposure project is aiming to serve as an important means of introducing people around the world to realities they might not normally be exposed to. Many barriers have begun to fall between people around the world, with near-instantaneous communication allowing people on opposite sides of the world to meaningfully interact. Intercultural and Youth leadership project encourage people from all walks of life to appreciate and understand distinct cultures and play a key role in creating productive dialogue across the world.
Activities: The major aspect of this project will be focusing on community life styles. Volunteers, Local Youth and Community members will have an opportunity to experience and exchange both work and leisure behavior patents in various activities, attitudes, interest, opinions and values. This activity will as well provide an opportunity to reflect on each involved person’s self-image or self-concept, the way they see themselves and believe and believe they are seen by other others. This is expected to be a composite of motivation, needs and wants influenced by factors such as culture, family, reference groups and social classes. In the realization of the above objectives, Participants will join series of activities that will include:-
Community economic Life
§ Sea weeding: Participating in seed preparation, planting and harvesting
§ Agriculture: Planting bananas, Cassava, Coconut etc. and harvesting
§ Fishing: Joining local fisherman’ activities local fishing boat as well hooks
§ Traditional medicine and health care (Learning and experience)
§ Rituals: Visiting ritual sites, learning and understanding
§ Ceremonies: Participating in wedding, initiation and other traditional and religious ceremonies
§ Family life: Home visits, storytelling, cooking locals etc.
§ Intensive Kiswahili Language (1-2 Hours every day)
§ Optional foreign Language teaching Class (1 hour per day preferably English, French and Spanish)
§ Intergenerational exchange: age groups knowledge and experience sharing events
§ Images of my (Self, Culture, Country etc.) Vs Others
§ Community Exhibitions: Sharing various arts, music food etc.
Study Part: You will have a great opportunity for educational and cultural exchange activities with the volunteers in the team, Local community members etc. This will include Cultural nights, educational tours/visit, workshops, debates, cultural shows/Exhibitions, Community engagement activities, Kiswahili language class and many other options from you and other volunteers’ menu.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in the communal living house close to the project. Basic accommodation facilities will be provided, in some cases volunteers should expect to share rooms with their host family members or other volunteers from the same or other projects. (No mix of different sex in the rooms). Volunteers’ relatives and friends can visit or staying over upon special approval.
Food: Trying a variety of foods from other cultures is part of the programs’ philosophy for an authentic experience in Tanzania, and may be both fun and challenging. Food on our projects generally reflects the local cuisine. Some foods that are part of a regular diet at your home country may not be available during the program. Vegetarian meals will be available. However volunteers with more specific dietary requirements may need to supplement the included meals at their own expense. Volunteers with food allergies (e.g., nuts) must inform the organisation about the existence and severity of the allergy. Three meals per day are provided to the Volunteers at the workplace or and at the accommodation. Meals and accommodation cost on transit to and from the project, during leisure or tourism activities or outside designated project area are volunteer’s responsibility. No reimbursements will be made for volunteers who miss their included meals.
Location & Leisure activities: Uzi is a small island in the south of Zanzibar’s main island Unguja. Little has changed in Uzi during the last centuries. The island is located in the Menai Bay Conservation area which forms an important ecosystem of mangrove forests, sea grass beds, islands with fresh water forest, coral reefs and a large diversity of plants, land and water animals, including dolphins, African Sea Eagles, and protected marine turtles. The Island is located about 34km south of Zanzibar Stone town. Few public buses are making routes on daily basis. During high tide, Uzi can only be reached by boat. It is common that during the project the tides situation will change, we will have to make good time planning when required to go out or inside the Island.
Possibilities for free time activities:-
§ Exploring Zanzibar historical, natural and cultural sites. These include museums, local markets, stone town, etc.
§ Enjoy wildlife and marine life. Jozani forest National Park, Blue safaris swimming, tour to small islands, variety of water sports, spice tour among many other options.
§ If you are arriving earlier or staying longer there are more safari options to the World’s great National Parks, Cultural and eco-tourism that Tanzania offers.
Remarks (Other Information): The participation fee for this project is €250 (EURO) or equivalent Tanzanian shillings. This fee is different from the amount paid to the sponsoring/sending organisation during your application process. Volunteer is required to transfer the participation fee to UVIKIUTA Bank account at least seven working days before the project start. Send by e-mail the receipt confirming that you have paid the full amount to our Bank account. On arrival you will receive an official receipt. Bank Information will be provided on the information sheet.
Special conditions: Volunteers need to be sufficient language proficiency to understand instruction given English. Be flexible, open minded and eager to learn, independent, commitment to treating others with respect, Non-judgmental approach that values different cultures, Interest in people, cultures and their stories and ability to work under less supervision.

Meeting point, date and time: Volunteers will be picked at Kiponda B&B along Kiponda Street, Stone town Zanzibar on 4th May 2018 at 16:00 (4.00pm) Local time. If you wish to stay in this Accommodation before or after the project you can book online and specify that you are one of the UVIKIUTA volunteers. Since this place is famous and accessible from both Zanzibar ferry port and Zanzibar International Airport- there will be NO airport pick up service. Provide your travel information at least seven working days before the project start. This should include Arrival date, time, flight or other means of transport number and destination (Terminal).
