The neighborhood of Rimac, at the time of colonial Lima, used to be the part of the town where the Spanish nobles had their luxurious residences. That changed with the time, and nowadays the hyped Miraflores and Barranco districts house the high and medium classes of Lima, while Rimac has been deserted. The ancient colonial and pre-colonial heritage has been for long neglected, but now the municipality, in collaboration with the Bolivarian Brigade of Volunteers, has decided to change the situation. For 2018, the Brigada, in partnership with other local organizations, presented a project of valorization and conservation of the historical center of Rimac to the World Heritage Volunteering Initiative in order to dynamize the process of rehabilitation of the district.The Brigade and the Municipality of Rimac welcome the volunteers willing to help us to help in the requalification of the Backus factory, the cleaning of the Huaca la Florida and the mobilization of the inhabitants in the Trujillo street.

Work: OBJECTIVESensitize the population of the district to the importance of the cultural heritage conservation through the requalification of historical sites of the city center.ACTIVITIESThe volunteers, under the supervision of a technical leader, will clean, paint and furnish the last floor of the ancient backus factory, in order to allow the Rimac social center to use it for cultural and pedagogic activities.The volunteers will clean the Huaca la Florida archeological site, in order to open the ancient temple ruins to the public. They will also organize an activity to raise awareness on the importance of the site targeting the local population.Supported by the local organization ocupa tu calle, the volunteer will organize street action in order to requalify the urban space of Jiron Trujillo, an ancient street with high tourist potential, by involving the local inhabitants.The participants will also prepare and implement some interventions in the Rimac schools aiming to sensitize the local pupils to the importance of local heritage and its preservation and valorization.

Accomodation and food: The participants will be accommodated in the historic center of Lima. The facility offers basic services: water, electricity, laundry. The participants will sleep in shared rooms and will have to bring their own sleeping bag. The volunteers will receive food and will have to take care of cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional, typical foods, drinks and recipes from your country of origin for the international evening

Location and Leisure: Rimac district is located in the northern part of Lima, the capital of Peru and ancient capital of the colonial dominions of Spain in the Andean region. Rimac district is nowadays mainly inhabited by low classes inhabitants, but just crossing the Rimac river you are in the very historical center of the town. You can breathe the atmosphere of the colonial Lima just walking in its ancient streets, lined with beautiful casona , the houses of the Spanish nobles.Besides, you have all the leisure activities of a big and modern capital at your disposal, museums, archeological sites, bars, restaurants, clubs, and even the possibility to surf on the waves of the Pacific Ocean From Lima you can easily organize excursions to visit all the most beautiful sites of Peru, like Machu Pichu, the Titicaca lake, the White Cordillera etc.

Requirements: Bring a warm sleeping bag, working clothes, gloves and shoes, warm and rain clothes and a flashlight. Everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
