Helping Estonian Nature Fund to control invasive plants and preserve habitat for endangered amphibians ProjectThe aim of this camp organised in cooperation with the Estonian Fund of Nature (ELF) is invasive plant control in South-East of Estonia, Karula National Park and habitat fine-tuning for endangered amphibian Naterjack Toad in West-Estonia Lowland. Thus this camp will be run on two sites:West-Estonia Lowland, Vatla i The West-Estonian Lowland formed on limestone bedrock is dominated by landscapes with calcareous soils and calciphilous plant communities, including alvars and various limestone bedrock knolls and escarpments. Against the background of the predominantly flat relief of the West-Estonian plains, single higher surface forms emerge, adding variety to the landscape. The oldest landforms here are limestone monadnocks or insular hillocks (Salevere Salumagi, Lihula Lossimagi, Kirbla, Mihkli Salumagi, Avaste etc.), which are composed of dolomite limestones of the Jaagarahu stage and are relics of the former Silurian Clint. The seaward slopes of such hills have abraded into escarpments with limestone cropping out at places, while spits of land piled up later on the opposite slopes of the hillocks.Karula National Park i Nature in Karula National Park (total area 123 sq. km) is very versatile. In the northern part of the national park semi-natural landscapes prevails which have emerged as a result of millennia of human activities. Here sparsely situated far
Work: Amphibians are one of the most threatened groups of species globally, as 1/2of all known frogs, toads and newts face extinction. Estonia has lost one toad and several other species are declining in a pace not natural. This project aims on fine-tuning of natterjack toad and crested newt in two different locations. In Karula the work is manually pulling out species of invasive plants before their seed ripe on semi-natural meadows. In Vatla the work will take place on abundant sand quarry, with a large population of otherwise rare amphibian. Practically it consists of cutting and collection of brushwood, mainly junipers around a small pool where natterjacks spawn. Nattejacks are typical for opened landscape and pools they spawn in need to be exposed to sun.Typical working hours per day 6 hours per day (for example: 9 -12 and 13-16).
Accomodation and food: Simple shared accommodation in both places. Volunteers need their own sleeping bag. You may take a tent, if you wish to have more privacy. All food is included except lunch on day for travelling. You will cook our own food (ingredients are provided) most of the time, some days the food will be cooked by locals.
