HOPE FOR VICTORIA CHILDREN

BACKGROUND

Hope for Victoria Children (HOVIC) was established in 2003. HOVIC aims at improving the quality of life of street children and those in the hidden sector whose rights have been rampantly abused, suffering malnutrition, harassment and missing out on education. HOVIC has since implemented programmes to address these ills, and has learnt over the years that long-term sustainable impact on street children’s lives is best cultivated from their communities. After years of reflection, HOVIC’s strategic direction has shifted with greater emphasis on empowering vulnerable children and their communities to create long-term sustainable change, through short term rehabilitation activities, reunification, and foster family economic support.

HOVIC has addressed needs and challenges experienced by children living and working on the streets of Kisumu city, including vocational training facilities and workshops for apprenticeships. So far HOVIC has supported more than 500 children with an average of 100 children on a daily basis accessing its services (health and hygiene care, non-formal education, vocational training, child psychosocial counseling etc.) at its day centre in Kisumu.

MAIN WORK ACTIVITIES

We conduct streets visits to bring boys from the street into the programme. Likewise we conduct visits in to the hidden sector to rescue girls from child labour and early age commercial work. Our rehabilitation process begins right from the streets, through counseling and psychosocial support. They include registration and case profile establishment, life skill (resilience training on various life issues), psychosocial support to children, their parents, guardians and families, home tracing and family conflict management. HOVIC has a night shelter facility where all boys who want to transform their lives from the streets and drug use reside for a period between 3- 6 months depending on each child’s individual case.
