EXTRA FEE: $480 Minimum (Covers $160/week for the first three weeks. The fee is the same
whether you stay for 1 day or 3 weeks). After three weeks, the extra cost will be $50 for each

All volunteers are required to work Monday-Friday 8:15 am-4 pm with a 12- 12:30 lunch break. There is the opportunity to work on the occasional
Saturday as well. Our projects are focused on rebuilding homes in a neighborhood that remains devastated from Hurricane Katrina and
commonly include: basic carpentry to replace rotted lumber in flooded homes; repairing damaged roofs; hanging, mudding and sanding sheetrock (drywall); painting and finishing work, including tiling, installing molding and
fixtures, and lot clearing and maintenance. All of our volunteer work is physically demanding, but we do not require you to arrive with any skills--
we're happy to teach you everything you need to know as long as you are willing to work hard!
Between March and October, work conditions for those volunteers doing rebuilding can be hot and dusty, while the winter months bring cooler
temperatures and much rain. We provide all safety gear, instruction, and supervision to ensure that the work proceeds in a safe and accident-free
manner. Transportation to and from work sites is provided by us.Volunteers will be expected to dress appropriately during work hours (work clothes, boots, etc.), and not in a manner that is inconsistent with the norms of the neighborhood. We live here, and we respect the values and customs of those around us, so inappropriate dress, behavior or language is considered
a sign of disrespect and grounds for dismissal from our program.
Regardless of the length of the program you were accepted for you will have a review after your first three weeks. If serious issues have come up and if you have not shown the ability or willingness to address them you may be asked to leave.


Our on-site housing consists of dormitory-style sleeping arrangements for up to 20 people in our
headquarters building on El Dorado Street. We are housed in a single story home that we have
rehabilitated for our use, but quarters are tight, so be prepared for the experience of living very
closely with your fellow volunteers. There are three bedrooms with eight beds in each room and two full bathrooms. Bunkrooms are not divided by gender. The experience is not unlike summer camp, and nothing like luxurious, so if you are looking for a vacation-type experience, you may be disappointed. There is WIFI available for volunteer use.

Volunteers will be expected to keep the living and common areas of the house as neat as possible
and meals will be prepared by volunteers, so be ready and willing to pull kitchen duty while you are
with us


Our volunteer house is a short five minute drive from the French Quarter. In the evenings and on
weekends, you will be free to explore the city and surrounding neighborhoods. We do not plan
recreational activities for volunteers, but we are happy to point you in the direction of our favorite
restaurants and jazz clubs. There is a lot to see, experience, hear and eat in New Orleans and we
expect all volunteers to do so in a responsible manner—alcohol consumption should be limited (and only for those 21 years of age and older!) and drug use is prohibited. Unfortunately, it is not safe to walk the distance between our house and the Quarter so you should plan for a $10-15 cab ride or $2 bus ride.


All volunteers must bring a pillow, sleeping bag or other bedding, shower towel, personal toiletries
and comfort items, any required medication and work appropriate footwear and clothing. Work
clothing should be comfortable pants/shorts, tee shirts or tank tops that you will not mind getting dirty.
You must wear solid, closed-toe shoes while working—sneakers are fine, but work boots are ideal. If you follow a particular dietary regimen, you will need to bring personal food items (we do
accommodate vegetarians). Please note that while we will not be responsible for any valuables that are lost, stolen or damaged while you are in our house or on work sites, most volunteers do bring cameras, ipods and cell phones for personal use. We recommend bringing a padlock for your locker to secure your valuables. Other items we recommend bringing include: insect repellant, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, reusable water bottle, bandana, sandals and flashlight.

 Required insurance: Volunteers must obtain health and accident insurance for the duration of your travel and stay in the United States. This insurance must cover you for all medical eventualities. You must bring all necessary documents, contact numbers, etc with you. (If you cannot prove that you have
insurance on arrival, you will not be allowed to take part in our workcamps.) Some travel related
insurance carriers are World Nomads, HTH Worldwide, and Global Rescue LLC."

 Spending money- Keep in mind that each person will spend different amounts, it is up to you to decide how much money you are willing to spend and where it is spent. Each city has different prices, so depending on the location of your project the costs might be more or less expensive. Here is an estimate of prices:

VFP does not provide insurance to volunteers on this project. Volunteers should carry their own travel/health insurance or be prepared to pay if they need to go to the doctor for non-
emergency issues.
VFP hosts, staff and co-leaders work hard to ensure a rewarding and unforgettable experience in the USA.
Please read the following expectations below.

 Every volunteer is an important and valuable part of the group. You are expected to be an active member, contribute to the work project, assist with cooking and cleaning, and participate in work and free- time activities. Please come prepared with recipes, photos, music, cultural information, group games and other information and activities to share with other volunteers and the community!
 Work activities will take place for about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. Some days and projects may have longer or shorter work periods depending on the weather, leadership, motivation, availability of materials and other factors. Be flexible!
 VFP and your local hosts will provide many fun and cultural free-time activities during the project. If volunteers decide to travel to a different location as a group or plan their own free-time activities they will be responsible to cover the expenses. The camp leaders will be able to share how much free-time activities will cost.
 Co-leaders, workcamp hosts and work project leaders are there to help you plan activities, understand your tasks, teach you how to use tools and many other things. They are not there to solve all your problems! If you have concerns or issues please raise them with a leader and work with the leader to engage the group in finding a solution that works for everyone!
 Volunteers are expected to live as a group. You are expected to stay for the entire duration of the project and are not allowed to arrange your own activities and spend days or nights away from the project.
 Smoking use is on the decline in the USA and in most of the communities where you are serving you will not see people smoking. It is prohibited in many buildings and also public spaces. You must be 18 years old to purchase cigarettes in the USA.
 The drinking age in the USA is 21 years old! It is illegal to purchase alcohol for a person younger than
21. Excessive drinking is a major social problem and is an obstacle to overcoming the social and
economic problems that afflict the world community today. Please check with the host regarding alcohol consumption where you are staying and if you choose to drink please be responsible and only do so during free-time.
 Any illegal drug use is strictly forbidden.
